There are 37 job openings for young Nigerians in the UN – Amina Mohammed

According to the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, there are 37 career openings for young Nigerians under the United Nations bureaucracy.

Mrs Mohammed speaking at a cultural night organised by Nigerians working at the United Nations Systems said the openings are available via the Junior Professional Officers’ (JPO) Programme, including an internship for young graduates.
Highlights:

  • Nigeria, she said, has the opportunity to sponsor its youth for UN careers through the JPO, but regretted that the nation has not seized the opportunity in a long while.
  • JPO is a programme for the young people to come and grow their career at the UN and it has 37 positions for Nigeria – one for each of the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory.
  • The JPO programme provides young professionals with hands-on experience in multilateral technical co-operation and is one of the best ways to gain entry-level positions within the UN system.
  • JPOs are sponsored by their own government, which funds their placement in one of a range of UN organisations.
  • At the cultural night, Amina asked older Nigerians to pave the way for the youth by creating leadership opportunities for them.
  • She urged them to stop competing with the younger ones for employment opportunities. “Whenever there are opportunities, try and pave the way for the young ones; you are getting old and we want to see the young ones in the system.
  • “We need to give the youth the opportunity because if we don’t give them the opportunities, they can easily fall victims of crimes,” she said.
  • “It’s really important that we remember, with what we do here, what we can get back home, that we can encourage those at home, and inspire them.
  • Amina condemned what she termed alarming gender-based violence in Nigeria, saying it has increased in dimensions that one could never imagine.
  • “So when I look back home and I see that there are women that are coming back from Boko Haram captivity, they come back with a type of violence that many, for the rest of their lives, can’t recover from.
  • “But I also see that what is worse is the kind of violence that is visited upon the young girl. She is indoctrinated and convinced to tie a bomb around her and blow it off; that’s violence against girls; that’s violence against women.
  • “But what I wanted to say was that as we look at the gender-based violence initiative that we put a spotlight on our own nation; we all have a part to play,” she said.
  • Mohammed also lamented how girls were left behind in education, stressing that everyone needs to have an education – the boys and the girls.
  • “The boys we didn’t educate are the same ones that kidnap the girls that we educated.
  • “So education for everyone is exposure for everyone; it matters so much; it really does give us the basis, the moral compass to help us navigate through life.”
  • Col. Jolly Abu (rtd), President, United Nations Staff Recreation Club Nigeria Association, said the cultural night was organised to showcase Nigeria’s culture.
  • According to him, the Nigerians in the UN are very proud of their culture adding, it is also for them to mingle, rekindle and renew their bonds.
  • “The UN encourages that we should meet and foster unity among ourselves and also enjoy ourselves; so that’s what we’re doing,” Abu said.

President Jacob Zuma given until November 30 to defend corruption charges against him

Coming after South Africa’s  Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) struck out an application by President Jacob Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to appeal a High Court ruling that the 2009 decision to drop 18 corruption charges against him was irrational, following charges related to Zuma’s alleged involvement in the country’s multi-billion rand arms deal, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) told Zuma yesterday that it will only consider new representations on why he should not face corruption charges on November 30, 2017.

NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku gave a detailed timeline for Zuma’s possible prosecution, including that he has until November 30 to make representations as to why the prosecuting authority should not charge him with corruption.
“The NDPP (National Director of Public Prosecutions) is of the view that, in light of the judgment of the SCA, it appears that any further representations envisaged by Mr Zuma should relate to issues not previously considered,” Mfaku said in a statement.
On April 6, 2009, then-NPA head Mokotedi Mpshe said recordings of telephone conversations between then-Scorpions boss Leonard McCarthy and former NPA boss Bulelani Ngcuka showed political interference in the decision to charge Zuma who was recently honored with a statue by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State.

Nnamdi Kanu: Justice Binta Nyako threatens to withdraw from case

Justice Binta Nyako of Abuja Federal High Court has threatened to withdraw from the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
Speaking during Nnamdi Kanu’s trial yesterdat, the trial judge predicated her threat on what she described as attempts by the defense to frustrate her.
Justice Binta Nyako’s warning came, following series of arguments between herself and counsels to the IPOB leader.
The argument ensued when Ejiofor was speaking on a motion he planned to bring before the court, but whose content had not been listed by the judge.
The judge, while reacting to an application by Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said she had been pushed to the brink by the defendant’s counsel and would recuse herself.

“If you don’t want me to continue in this matter, I will recuse myself.
“I told you that the matter is not yet before me,” said Nyako while stressing that the defendants were making the matter difficult.

MrsnowgysSport :Sports Minister Dalung's Lies Exposed by NFFs letter

/2016/08/nff-letter-exposes-minister.html

The NFF has decided to let people know what is going on in the sports affair commission and i think this is a good way to develop our football. We need accountability from the people that are there.
To prove that the minister was briefed about the trip and request put to him to allow the federation take extra members of delegation who will make the team’s work easier, as against his allegation that they it padded the team list, the letter was sent to Sports Vanguard for verification.

The letter which was signed by the General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi was dated May 9, 2016 with Reference Number NFF/OGS/GEN/Vol. XVI/129 and received at the office of the minister on May 10, 2016 duly signed for.

The letter also copied to the Permanent Secretary of the ministry has as its heading, “Conveyance of Nigeria’s U-23 Team’s Program ahead of Rio Olympics and Request on Extra Members of Delegation”.
Informing the minister that the sports ministry would be responsible for the entire bill of the team’s camping programme and friendly matches in the United Kingdom, the NFF wrote “This is to respectfully convey to the Honourable Minister, the program of the Nigeria U-23 Football Team, also known as Dream Team, with regards to proposed camping in the United Kingdom and the United States of America ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.”

It also informed the minister that the organisers of the Invitational Tournament in South Korea told the NFF that they would cater for 20 players and 10 officials during the friendly matches. As a result, the NFF asked the minister to “approve for release by the ministry the attached estimate (about N22.5m and $471,052 for the Ist phase in the UK and N1.7m and $154,603 for the 2nd phase in the USA) for the entire program in the UK and the bill for the extra 10 players and one official in the USA, as head coach (Siasia) intends to make the trip with 30 players and 11 officials.

The NFF would however, not confirm if the minister gave the approval after receiving the letter as all calls and messages put across to the president, Amaju Pinnick and General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi were not replied. Meanwhile a member of the team told Sports Vanguard that “I can hit my chest and and say it’s only our football team that had the fewest accompanying officials, we never went with 35 officials. If you can, ask him(the minister) how he appointed for the team a Welfare Officer, who is (President) Buhari’s late brother’s son, whose mother is the CoS to the First Lady by name Modibo."

Another source said because Siasia refused to include one player the minister brought to him in the team because the boys was not good enough, he incurred the wrath of the minister who then went onto deny knowledge of the team’s presence in the USA. However, when the minister heard of the team’s travails in the US he said, “I am hearing the story of our U-23 team camping in the USA for the first time now; we don’t know who took them there and what their mission there is. It’s like when somebody goes to market and have problem, then, he will hold the ministry responsible.”
