Nothing will ever divide us – Akpabio, Udom

Senate Minority Leader and immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio and his successor, Governor Udom Emmanuel, have vowed that nothing will ever come between them as being witnessed in many states.

According to them, they will never step on the “banana peel” of disagreement between former governors and their successors they helped to ascend to power. They spoke yesterday at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly at Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital.
They spoke as the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Honourable Onofiok Luke, said the House is working hard to ensure harmonious relations among former and serving leaders of the state to ensure peace, stability, continued growth and development of Akwa Ibom. Akpabio, who chaired the event and endorsed Udom for second term, said: “What happen in Abuja that make people to fight people in their states will not happen between Udom and I. We will remain together and united… In 2015, they said Udom right. Udom is right for 2019.” Akpabio also urged the sustenance of cordial relations between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state. He said the Senate will revisit the issue of devolution of powers to the federating units to boost development in the states and grassroots. In like manner, Governor Udom Emmanuel said nothing will separate him from the love of his leader (Akpabio), adding, “the banana peel in Nigeria that make governors and their leaders fight, Akpabio and I will not match it. We have where we are going in Akwa Ibom and we will go together. That is why anything you write about us in the papers that will divide us we have ignored.” Noting that the executive enjoys harmonious relations with the legislature in the state, he urged the lawmakers to continue on their path of legislative excellence. Stressing the need for leaders of the state to be united, Speaker Luke said: “In the House, we told ourselves that we must ensure there is bond between Senator Akpabio and Governor Udom Emmanuel, including Obong Victor Attah.” Saluting the governor for not interfering or influencing the decisions of the House, he said the House is not a rubber stamp legislature but “iron seal legislature that iron seals development and infrastructural Renaissance.” Major highlights of the event included a lecture by Senator Effiong Bob on “The role of the Legislature in the Development of Akwa Ibom State in the past 25 years” and the inauguration of the Akwa Ibom Legislative Internship Programme, AKILIP, which Akpabio described as the first of its kind in Africa

President Jacob Zuma given until November 30 to defend corruption charges against him

Coming after South Africa’s  Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) struck out an application by President Jacob Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to appeal a High Court ruling that the 2009 decision to drop 18 corruption charges against him was irrational, following charges related to Zuma’s alleged involvement in the country’s multi-billion rand arms deal, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) told Zuma yesterday that it will only consider new representations on why he should not face corruption charges on November 30, 2017.

NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku gave a detailed timeline for Zuma’s possible prosecution, including that he has until November 30 to make representations as to why the prosecuting authority should not charge him with corruption.
“The NDPP (National Director of Public Prosecutions) is of the view that, in light of the judgment of the SCA, it appears that any further representations envisaged by Mr Zuma should relate to issues not previously considered,” Mfaku said in a statement.
On April 6, 2009, then-NPA head Mokotedi Mpshe said recordings of telephone conversations between then-Scorpions boss Leonard McCarthy and former NPA boss Bulelani Ngcuka showed political interference in the decision to charge Zuma who was recently honored with a statue by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State.

Atiku’s son remanded in cell for disobeying court order as child custody battle with wife deepens

A magistrate court in Lagos has remanded Aminu, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, for contempt.

He was locked up in the transit cell of Tinubu chief magistrates court Lagos for disobeying a court order.
Aminu was alleged to have disobeyed an order made by Kikelomo Ayeye, the chief magistrate, in October over the custody of six-year-old Amir Abubakar.
He was said to have taken away Amir from the custody of Fatimo Bolori, his wife.
The chief magistrate had earlier ordered the respondent in the suit marked FCL/29/2017, between U. F. Bolori Vs M. A. Abubakar to produce Amir Abubakar at the first hearing of the case.
When the case came up on Wednesday for the discharge of ‘Emergency, evacuation/protection order’ made by the court, the court was informed that the parties were planning to settle out of court.

In response, Nwabuzor Okoh, Bolori’s lawyer, denied receiving any notification from the respondent to settle out of court.
Ayeye subsequently cited Abubakar’s  disobeying court order issued on October 11.
She ordered that the respondent be remanded in transit cell and the case stood down pending when he would produce the boy.
Fatimo and Aminu had divorced in 2011.
The children were reportedly living with Fatimo on an arrangement that they should be allowed to spend their vacation with their father.
However, when the children were on holidays with Aminu in 2013, he reportedly refused to let them return to their mother. (TheCable)

INEC to recruit one million ad hoc workers for 2019 elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmud Yakub, told the Senate Committee on INEC on Wednesday that the commission would recruit about one million ad hoc members of staff for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.
According to him, the ad hoc workers to be deployed for the polls, which will begin in 484 days, will be about 300 higher than the 700 engaged for the 2015 general elections.
He said,
“The projected increase in the number of ad hoc (members of ) staff to be engaged in the elections by the commission arose from the need to make provisions for adequate manpower for the exercise on a general template and, specifically, to take care of peculiar needs for that purpose in some polling units across the federation.”

The INEC boss, at the interactive session with the lawmakers, also disclosed that the commission was planning to make the five categories of disfranchised Nigerians participate in the 2019 general elections.
The five categories, according to him, are the 16,000 INEC personnel, members of the civil society organisations who serve as election monitors and observers, the media, security personnel and prison inmates.
Yakub assured Nigerians that the smart card readers to be deployed for the polls would function efficiently as users would be adequately trained on its usage before the election.
He noted that the irregularities recorded in the last poll due to malfunctioning of the devices, would be prevented in the forthcoming elections as adequate training would be provided for those to who would handle the equipment.
“Controversies and challenges raised on the smart card readers in the 2015 elections, to us in INEC, were over magnified because the problem was not technological on the part of the device but attitudinal on the part of the users due to lack of adequate training.
“Thus, because the problem is more of attitudinal than technological defects, solid steps are being taken by the commission to bring about robust interface between the machine and those to use them in terms of practical trainings before the elections,” Yakub said.

Yakub boasted that INEC would show Nigerians how prepared it was for the 2019 general elections with how the governorship elections would be conducted in Anambra State in November 2017 and in Ekiti and Osun states in 2018.

Family of Monkeypox victim who committed suicide in Bayelsa blasts hospital

The identity of the Monkeypox victim who committed suicide in Bayelsa State, has been revealed after his family blasted the hospital the man was in.

According to a new report by The Nation newspaper, the Monkeypox victim who committed suicide at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State has been identified as Mr. Perekebina Biu.

Biu was receiving treatment in the isolation ward of the hospital when he reportedly hanged himself with a rope.

It was gathered that the deceased until the incident was the Treasurer of the Agbere Youth body in Sagbama Local Government Area and was married with three children.

His father, it was learnt, hails from Patani in Delta state while his mother is from Agbere community.

Agbere was reportedly recovering from the Monkeypox disease he contracted in Yenagoa before he took his life.

Family sources, who spoke in confidence to The Nation, blasted the management of NDUTH.

They accused the hospital management of negligence wondering how a patient in a quarantine centre could take his life easily without the knowledge of doctors and nurses.

A source said:

“The late victim was in the hospital for treatment. And he was responding to treatment though. But come to think about it, how did it happen?
“The Monkeypox victims were supposed to be in an isolated area. Where were the Doctors, nurses and other staff? Where did he get the rope? The hospital management has a question to answer.”
The deceased, according to family sources had no record of a mental case.

The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, had said the deceased was among the 21 suspected cases of ‘Monkeypox’ that were being managed at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH).

He expressed regret that the patient took his own life despite speedily recovering from the disease.

He sympathised with the family and said that a committee had been put in place to evaluate his past and recent clinical and social history. Adding that the examination would determine “if there were undisclosed mental illness or personal family problem that could have justified the suicide”.

CLEANEDGE BEGAN SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT CAMPAIGN

Prior to the official start of the CleanEdge’s save the environment campaign, the project coordinating team visited Methodist Grammar School Bodija yesterday 4th of October, 2017 in what they call the Pilot Phase of the program. It can be recalled earlier that Cleanedge called for volunteers on 22nd of September 2017 in effort to sensitize secondary school student in Oyo State how best they can manage their waste.
The visiting team is made up of the Campaign Manager; Tosin Gbadegesin, Campaign Coordinator; Temitope Ogunweide, Instructor; Toyib Aremu, and the Content Creator, Okunade Waliyah. The reason for this visit is to have a firsthand knowledge of the challenges our volunteers will be facing when we send them out for the campaign.

Reception at the school was awesome showing the right audience was picked and by the time Toyib Aremu started his presentation on waste, how it’s improperly managed, our activities hampering the environment etc. the student and management were all rapt with attention. By the end of his speech which was made so eloquently, most if not all the students knew different ways to recycle their waste and few ways to properly manage their waste. Proof of impact was brilliant questions the students were able to ask at the end of the presentation.
After the question and answer sessions, the school was presented with waste paper bins. CleanEdge hope that when they see these bins they’ll remember “save the environment” campaign and strive to put what was taught to good use. Students were also encouraged to teach others what they learnt today.
Cleanedge therefore hope to take this sensitization exercise to over 150 secondary schools in the state 33 local government from 19th of October to 17th of November 2017

CLEANEDGE SOLUTIONS PLEDGE TO SHOULDER OYO STATE’S ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

Back in 2015, when the United Nations established a set of shared goals and targets for achieving sustainable development around the world, the development community has been energized, excited but a little bit wary. While the ambition contained in the Global Goals is high, the challenge is very high as well. We do not yet know how things will unfold, but one thing is for sure: the scale, scope and complexity of the economic, environmental and social transformation to come will be such that no one sector- government, businesses, civil society or academia- will be able to manage the development alone. We are going to need some coalition that will bring different sectors together if we are to achieve the set goals.
Civil society organizations, with their capacity for increasing accountability and promoting development plays a very important role if partnership with both governments and businesses can be fostered. By sharing information, resources, activities and capabilities, we can achieve things together that we can never achieve alone.
At CleanEdge Solutions, we are already busy planning strategic partnership, and a particular priority for us now is to improve the cleanliness of Oyo state. We at CleanEdge have the expertise, knowledge and capacity at all levels to contribute to development, especially at the national and community levels. We are looking forward to creating a shared value which will help mobilize businesses to identify and focus on specific efforts to support the SDGs.
We hope to achieve a cleaner Oyo State by 2025 through massive waste education in secondary and tertiary schools of the state, waste collection and waste house where activities such as Recycling, Organic Fertilizer production, Sanders production from Plastics and turn Oyo state capital to a conducive habitat for all.
