The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Monday advised commercial vehicle owners to comply with the Oct. 1 deadline for the installation of speed limiting devices in their vehicles. The Auchi Unit Commander of FRSC, Mr Moses Bature, gave the advice at a stakeholders meeting in Auchi, Headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo. Bature said that the installation of speed limiting device in commercial vehicles became imperative due to the records of daily crashes attributed to speeding. He said that the measure would help to reduce the rate of road accidents across the country. “I advise you people to get the device installed in your vehicles as the Oct. 1 deadline for the commencement of the implementation of the policy remains unchanged.” The commander said that the commission was relentless on the enforcement of the speed limiting device because speed had been identified as a key risk factor in road traffic injuries. “The general attitude of drivers and fleet operators themselves to speed management has prompted the corps to make speed limiting device in transport vehicles mandatory. “Those who engage in this practice should have a rethink because continued incidents of road crashes occasioned by excessive speed necessitated the commission introducing the device.” The commander, therefore, urged commercial vehicle owners to ensure they keyed into the policy by installing the device in their vehicles, adding that failure to do so could lead to their being arrested and prosecuted.
